Florida Registered Mental Health Interns

These professionals are individuals who intend to practice in Florida and are in the process of satisfying the postgraduate or post-masters’ level experience requirements as specified in FL s. 491.005(1)c (3)c or (4)c for the following practices: clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist, mental health counselor. These professionals are providing services under the supervision of a qualified registered supervisor.

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

Marriage & Family Therapists have a Masters’ Degree (MA or MS) from an accredited graduate school with a specialization in counseling psychology. They treat individuals, families or groups including children, adolescents and adults for a wide range of emotional and behavioral disorders. Marriage and Family Therapists may work in hospitals, businesses, agencies, or private practices.

Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

Mental Health Counselors have a Masters’ Degree (MA or MS) from an accredited graduate school with a specialization in counseling psychology. They treat individuals, families or groups including children, adolescents, and adults for a wide range of emotional and Behavioral disorders.

Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Clinical Social Workers have a Masters’ Degree (MSW) from an accredited graduate school with a specialization in health care services. They plan, organize and administer direct services and intervene in individual, group, community, and organizational systems. Clinical Social Workers often work in hospitals, social service agencies, or private practices.

Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)

Psychiatric Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) have completed a Masters’ Degree in the specialty of psychiatry/mental health and are licensed and certified to assess, diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders and mental health problems. They provide a full range of mental health services to individuals, families, groups and communities, function as psychotherapists, and under protocol with a physician, prescribe medication.

School Psychologist (SS)

School Psychologists may have a Doctorate Degree (PhD, PsyD, EdD), a Specialist’s Degree (EdS, CAS-SP), or a Masters’ Degree (MA, MS, MEd) from an accredited graduate school with specialization in learning, adjustment, and social/emotional disorders in children and adolescents. Their services typically include psychoeducational evaluation, counseling, consultation and program development. School psychologists often work in government agencies, public or private schools or private practice.

Psychologist (PY)

Psychologists have completed a doctoral program in Philosophy, Psychology, or Education (PhD – Doctor of Philosophy, Psy.D – Doctor of Psychology, Ed.D – Doctor of Education). They diagnose and treat emotional and behavioral disorders in children, adolescents, and adults that range from mild to very severe. Psychologists most often work in hospitals, businesses, or private practice.

Psychiatrist (ME)

Psychiatrists are physicians who have a medical degree (MD) or (DO) with a specialization in human behavior. They treat a wide range of emotional and behavioral disorders and may be working in hospitals, businesses, government agencies, private practice, etc. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication.
